October visits to Brandywine, Baltimore Opera highlight programs
Oct. 7, 2008
GETTYSBURG, PA – Delve into the story behind the complex, bloody and hard-fought Battle of Brandywine through a one-day bus trip Oct. 25 to the battlefield in Chester County.
Or go even further back into history with an exploration of the life of composer Giuseppe Verdi and the origin of his famous opera, “Aida,” set in Egypt during the mystical time of the Pharaohs. Students first meet for an orientation in a classroom session on Oct. 15, and then two days later see a live performance by the Baltimore Opera Company.
Both programs are offered by the Gettysburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College and are open to anyone who wants to sign up.

“Battle of Brandywine” leaves the Gettysburg Campus at 7:30 a.m. and returns at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25. The cost is $99. Deadline to register is Oct. 10. For history buffs, Sept. 11, 1977, marks the day that George Washington and his reorganized Continental Army confidently awaited a frontal attack by the British along the banks of Brandywine Creek. What followed was the largest single-day battle of the American Revolution. Instructor Stuart R. Dempsey will act as tour guide.

“Verdi’s ‘Aida’” is a two-session class taught by Instructor Anthony J. Strauss. The class meets from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, for an orientation session then meets from 6-11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, to travel to Baltimore for a production of this famous opera about an enslaved Ethiopian princess.
