Sept. 23, 2008
HARRISBURGRealist painter Larry Holmes shows clever use of pattern and an intriguing overhead perspective in his paintings, which will be on display Oct. 22-Nov. 14 in the art gallery at Rose Lehrman Art Center on the Harrisburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.
Holmes, whose work has been shown nationally, will lecture at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, in Room 214 of Whitaker Hall, followed by a reception in the gallery. The public is invited.
Many of Holmes’ works highlight the textural click on image for caption (login required) and high resolution photo (login required)beauty of still lifes by placing a hierarchy of inanimate objects, like shells or statues, beside fresh-cut flowers or animals.
“Holmes’ interest in the balance of two-dimensional design and representation finds a model in classical mosaics in which individual monochromatic tesserae (mosaic tiles) are assembled to create both designs and images,” says Janis Tomlinson, director of University Museums at the University of Delaware, Newark, where Holmes is a professor emeritus.
Holmes has a bachelor’s of fine arts and master’s degrees from Pittsburg (Kan.) State University and a master’s of fine arts from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Fields, Mich. He was on the faculty at the University of Delaware until his retirement in 2004, then was appointed professor emeritus.
He has received a number of awards including a Yaddo Fellowship, where he was an artist in residence at the artists’ community in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and Outstanding Teacher Award at Delaware University.
All gallery events are free and open to the public. Hours are 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday, and 5-7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. For more information call 780-2435 or e-mail Kim Banister, gallery curator.
