Documentary, director’s appearance sponsored by campus Diversity Affairs Committee

YORK – Erin Davies will bring her award-winning, international film success story, “Fagbug,” to HACC’s York Campus on Tuesday, April 10.
The screening begins at 6:30 p.m. in the community room Cytec Building on the campus. Davies will be available from 4-5:30 p.m. outside the building to speak to students, faculty, staff and the community. The campus Diversity Affairs Committee is sponsoring the event, which is free.
When Davies, a graduate student in Albany, N.Y., put a rainbow sticker on her VW Bug in April 2007, her car was vandalized with graffiti “fag” and “u r gay” across the hood and driver’s side window. Initially shocked and embarrassed, Davies left graffiti intact and drove her car for a week to raise awareness about homophobia. Bolstered by public reaction, she dubbed the car “fagbug,” took it on a 58-day trip around the United States and Canada and turned the experience into a full-length documentary.
After a year, Davies gave the “fagbug” a radical makeover, turning the entire car into a moving rainbow emblazoned with the letters “fagbug.” She dedicated her first film to the person who vandalized her car, saying the slurs did not defeat her but empowered her to make a positive difference. She’s currently working on a second film about her life-changing adventures.
Her mission, she says, is to “raise awareness about hate crimes and homophobia, to give a voice for those who are silent, to inspire others to take a stand against bullies and to be an example of how to overcome obstacles in bringing creative projects to life.” More information about Davies and her mission can be found at www.fagbug.com.
Although Davies has appeared in neighboring communities in central Pennsylvania, this is her first stop in York.
