‘Dresses for a Cure’ sponsored Phi Theta Kappa honor society
March 10, 2012
GETTYSBURG – The popular prom dress sale at HACC’s Gettysburg Campus will be held from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, March 24, in the Robert C. Hoffman Community Room.
The third annual “Dresses for a Cure” offers gently worn gowns and accessories just in time for the annual high school prom season.
Shoppers will find prom, bridesmaid and cocktail dresses in a variety of sizes and styles, handbags and jewelry. Gowns will be priced at $20 or less, and accessories will be available for less than $10. Dressing rooms will be available. Door prizes will be awarded, and hair stylists, make-up consultants, a seamstress, and other vendors will be available for consultations.
Several of the dresses were collected and donated by students at Wilson College, said Sally Showers, one of the event organizers.
Sisters and former HACC students Sally Showers and Sue Roberts partner with Phi Theta Kappa honor society members to raise funds for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life and the Phi Theta Kappa scholarship fund. Last year, $1,400 was raised, Showers said.
“With the economy as it is today, it is important to help out and give back as much as possible to the community,” said Showers. “Yes, we do this to raise money for, what we believe, is a great cause, but it's bigger than that. It’s also about providing girls a way to go to prom in a really beautiful dress that didn't break their parents’ or their own savings accounts.”
Donations of prom clothing and accessories will be accepted until the time of sale. To donate a garment, contact Wendy Brubaker, faculty co-adviser of Phi Theta Kappa, at wabrubak@hacc.edu or Sally Showers at ss2079@ship.edu.
