Black History Mobile Museum and guest lecturer from the 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee group, Public Enemy
The Black History 101 Mobile Museum will present its latest exhibit, “NECESSARY!,” at HACC’s York and Gettysburg campuses this month. On Tuesday, Feb. 19 from 1:15-2:15 p.m., HACC-Gettysburg Campus will also host Professor Griff, founder of hip hop group Public Enemy and 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee for a lecture.
On Monday, Feb., 18, the mobile exhibition will be at HACC’s York Campus’ Cytec Community Room from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The following day on Tuesday, Feb. 19, the mobile museum will be at HACC’s Gettysburg Campus’ Robert C. Hoffman Community Room from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
The free program is sponsored by the Office of Multicultural Programs at HACC-Gettysburg and HACC-York.
The exhibit highlights the life and legacy of Malcolm X. “NECESSARY!” takes a different approach to teaching the legacy of Malcolm X in America through original letters, handbills, photographs, newspapers, magazines, figurines and other memorabilia. The artifacts are displayed chronologically starting with items from slavery that build a context around what produced a revolutionary mind such as Malcolm X in America. The display ends with Malcolm X's influence on today’s conscious voices in hip hop culture.
Highlights of the exhibit include one page from the Alex Haley typewritten interview with Malcolm X for Playboy magazine signed by Malcolm X; the original lynching photograph from Marion, Ind. that inspired the song "Strange Fruit" by Billie Holliday; an original letter written by Elijah Muhammad; and a handbill advertising Malcolm X speaking in Washington, D.C. Additionally, the display will feature Black Panther newspapers showing Malcolm X's influence and original hip hop artifacts from KRS One and Public Enemy.
In the afternoon of Feb. 19, Professor Griff, founder of hip hop group Public Enemy will lecture on Malcolm X's influence on Public Enemy as well as the group’s road to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His lecture will be from 1:15- 2:15 p.m. in HACC’s Gettysburg Campus’ Robert C. Hoffman Community Room.
