'Clouds, Smoke and Vapors' at HACC's Rose Lehrman Art Gallery Reception – Thursday, Aug. 29
July 16, 2013
HARRISBURG, Pa. –The work of artist Ward Davenny, in several media, will be on display in the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery on the Harrisburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, beginning Wednesday, July 17 through Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013. A closing reception will be held on Thursday, Aug. 29 at 6:30 p.m. The artist will speak about his work before the reception in Whitaker Hall, Room 214, at 5:30 p.m.

Davenny is known in part for chasing tornadoes. “Though my work may initially strike a viewer as being about weather,my fascination lies with the movement of light and air,” Davenny said about his work. I rarely focus on actual moments of destruction, or the ‘engine’ of impact (i.e., a tornado or fire), but rather strive to infer a narrative based on these fleeting, serial moments of implied violence, suggestive of anticipation and sometimes dread.” Though many of theimages are photographs, the sensibility in all the work is of a painter.

Davenny has a master’s degree in fine arts from Yale University located in New Haven, Conn., in painting and printmaking, and a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from San Francisco Art Institute in printmaking in San Francisco, Calif. He is a professor at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa., in the department of art and art history. He has been guest lecturer at many institutions such as the University of Washington’s graduate painting program in Seattle, Wash., the University of Puget Sound located in Tacoma, Wash., Cornell University’s printmaking department in Ithaca, N.Y. and Chicago Art Institute’s graduate program located in Chicago, Ill.

Davenny received Individual Fellowship Grants from the Mid-Atlantic Council for the Arts and the Pennsylvania Council for the Arts as well as two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship Grants. Davenny’s work is in many collections, including the British Museum in  London, the Fogg Museum in Cambridge, Mass., the Newark Public Library Print Collection in  Newark, N.J. and the Minneapolis Institute of Art in Minneapolis, Minn.

Summer gallery hours are 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Monday-Thursday. After Monday, Aug. 19 the gallery will be open 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Monday-Friday and 5-7 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday.
