HARRISBURG, Pa. – “The Mighty Ballpoint,” drawings by Cynthia Brantley, will be on exhibit at the Fenêtre Gallery at HACC’s Midtown 2 location from Friday, Nov. 15 through Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013. A reception will be held for the artist Friday, Nov. 15, from 6-8 p.m., during 3rd in the Burg.
For many years, Brantley painted and drew images of women. In the 1990s, she began to shift toward geometric shapes, but still with a relationship to the symbolists.
This exhibition of ballpoint pen drawings is more whimsical. “I started with whatever line drawing came to mind and then developed the final images from them,” said Brantley. “Some of the images, such as the little floating shapes with spines, are so unrelated to my usual forms that they came as a surprise to me. As doodles I have never tried to articulate a meaning, either to myself or for a viewer. Ultimately, they exist as examples of my love of the marks of a pen, the forms that they take and the simple enjoyment of the process of drawing.”
Brantley has a four-year certificate in painting from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, a bachelor of fine arts from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and a master’s degree in fine arts from the University of Pennsylvania.
Fenêtre Gallery is on the second floor of HACC’s Midtown 2 location at 1500 Third St. The entrance to the building is on Reily Street. The gallery is open on Wednesdays from 4-6 p.m. and the third Friday of the month 6-8 p.m., or by appointment. Events are free and open to the public.
