Community events held to honor veterans
Nov. 4, 2013
HARRISBURG, Pa. – On Monday, Nov. 11, 2013, HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, will hold its annual Veterans Day tribute at bookstores located on the College’s campuses in Gettysburg, Harrisburg, Lancaster, Lebanon and York.

HACC is inviting members of the community into the bookstores to help support our local veterans and the Wounded Warrior Project, a nonprofit organization that provides programs and services to injured service members. A prisoners of war (POW)/missing in action (MIA) remembrance table will also be displayed.

“HACC celebrates Veterans Day each year as a way to honor our more than 800 veteran students who attend HACC each semester,” said Adam Walter, director of military and veteran affairs. “Veterans add diversity and experience to our classroom discussions.”

HACC bookstores are also offering 10 percent off on all clothing and gift items from Monday, Nov. 11 through Friday, Nov. 15. For every sale of $10 or more, HACC will donate $1 (up to $1,000) to the Wounded Warrior Project. The community is invited to stop at any HACC bookstore and consider donating a minimum of $1 to support the Wounded Warrior Project.

HACC’s chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges, will also support our veterans by hosting a career workshop for them on Monday, Nov. 18, 2013, from 2:30-6 p.m. in Room 203 of the East Building at HACC’s Lancaster Campus (1641 Old Philadelphia Pike).

The workshop will provide veterans with tips on developing a resume, searching for jobs and preparing for job interviews. Veterans will also learn interviewing techniques specifically geared towards their military experience. To register for the career workshop, contact Brandy Stabley at anovpprog@gmail.com.

HACC was recently chosen as the only college in Pennsylvania to participate in VetSuccess on Campus, a federally funded Veterans Administration program aimed at easing the transition to academic life for military veterans and their families. VetSuccess on Campus provides a comprehensive, one-stop service for educational and employment needs for veterans and their families. Veterans do not have to be HACC students to participate in the services provided by VetSuccess.
