YORK  – HACC’s York Campus is introducing a new daytime, part-time clinical nursing program that will allow students the option of selecting a clinical program during the day.

Prospective students are invited to attend a health care career information session at the York Campus on Tuesday, Dec. 17, from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Glatfelter Community Room of the Cytec Building, 2161 Pennsylvania Ave.

Cynthia Donell, HACC’s director of nursing for the York Campus, notes that the new daytime clinical nursing schedule accommodates local requests and should make it easier for interested students to pursue a nursing career while also juggling work and home obligations. She said health institutions, advisory committees and students requested consideration of a daytime option and the adjustment accommodates that demand. 

“When it’s time for the clinical part of the program, students no longer have to take classes part-time in the evening,” says Donell. “They now have the choice of part-time classes offered during the day. This will help students better balance their work and home schedules as more child care options are available during the day.”

HACC partners with several regional healthcare providers to offer nursing students a premier educational experience, including Wellspan Health, York Hospital, Memorial Hospital, Penn State’s Hershey Medical Center and York County’s Pleasant Acres Nursing Home.

It typically takes students two and a half years to complete HACC’s part-time nursing program. The new day program will mirror its evening program counterpart with students choosing between a schedule that includes classes offered during weekdays and weekends as clinical sites are available.

HACC nursing students complete general education requirements before applying for the clinical part of the program. When the pre-nursing part is complete, students then apply for the clinical portion, which is competitive and based on points and course performance. An associate of arts degree is awarded upon successful completion and enables graduates to sit for the NCLEX® (National Council Licensure Examination) and to be licensed by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.

Classes start Monday, January 13, 2014. Flexible scheduling, classes at other campuses close to work or home and online classes through virtual learning are also available. Enrollment is underway.
