Gettysburg Campus - English as a second language (ESL) Flyer - English Version HACC classes to be hosted at Adams County Tech Prep Building
Dec. 11, 2013
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – A new partnership between the Gettysburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, and the Gettysburg Area School District opens new doors for valuable training opportunities for Adams County residents and employers.

In February 2014, HACC will begin offering emergency medical technician (EMT) classes at Adams County Tech Prep on the Gettysburg Area High School campus, 1130 Old Harrisburg Road. In March 2014, English as a second language (ESL) classes will also be offered at Adams County Tech Prep.

“HACC is delighted to have access to the resources a facility like the Adams County Tech Prep site offers. The proximity of our two campuses, particularly with the opening of the North Gettysburg Trail last spring, makes this partnership extremely attractive to HACC,” said Shannon Harvey, HACC’s Gettysburg Campus vice president.

“In 2010 when the Gettysburg Area School District school board began discussions on the construction of a dedicated facility for the Adams County Tech Prep programs, it was their vision that the facility would become a center for career and technical training programs available not only for current high school students, but also post-secondary students,” said Larry Redding, Ed.D., district superintendent.  “This partnership brings this goal and vision to reality for the adults in our community and adds value to the educational programs our school district supports.”

Adams County Tech Prep is a consortium of the school districts of Gettysburg Area, Littlestown Area, Fairfield Area, Conewago Valley and Bermudian Springs.

EMT classes start Feb. 3, 2014

“HACC is committed to bringing its EMT course to as many people as possible,” said Rob Bernini, training institute administrative director and instructional program coordinator at HACC’s Shumaker Public Safety Center.”

Students who successfully complete the program will be eligible to take the required Pennsylvania Department of Health/National Registry of EMT’s exams. Students may also use the EMT training program to obtain entry-level positions in health care fields or as an elective toward a HACC degree program.

EMT classes begin Feb. 3, 2014, and will meet on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 6-10 p.m. through July 8, 2014. Tuition – which includes textbook, stethoscope, disposable supplies and pocket mask – is $825. Students must be 16 years old to enroll. ESL classes start March 3, 2014

HACC’s Language Institute will offer a series of English as a second language (ESL) classes for college and careerstudents. The eight-week intermediate and advanced levels of ESL classes are designed for adults who may lack work-related English language skills, are looking to improve their English-language understanding and pronunciation, have not had success in previous formal ESL classes or need more training before attending ESL classes for credit.

HACC student Gustavo Samayoa credits the ESL classes for “helping me with grammar, writing, spelling and most importantly my confidence in speaking.” Samayoa added, “I can now communicate better with my co-workers and my supervisor. I feel more optimistic about my future, about studying and working.”

Robin Paulison, director of adult education pathways at HACC’s Language Institute, said “We see these not just as language classes, but as opportunities to break down barriers. The courses will give students more confidence in English, allow them to have success in the classroom and the workplace and participate more fully in our society. We’re very excited to bring HACC’s Language Institute ESL classes to the Adams County community.”

ESL classes begin March 3, 2014, and will meet Mondays and Wednesdays through April 23, 2014, from 6-8:30 p.m. Tuition is $195 per course with an additional $25 materials fee.

Before starting class, students must attend a free orientation session on how to enroll and take a placement test. Orientation sessions are scheduled Monday, Feb. 3 or Monday, Feb. 17, 2014, from 6-8 p.m.
