Course for civilian owners taught this fall at the Piccola Law Enforcement Complex
“Basic Handgun Marksmanship and Safety for Civilians,” an eight-hour course covered in two sessions, provides instruction on how to safely store and operate handguns. Classes are held in the state-of-the-art indoor firing range at the Sen. Jeffrey E. Piccola Law Enforcement Complex and taught by veteran instructors certified by the Municipal Police Officers’ Education and Training Commission in their area of expertise.
“We have a responsibility to train those interested in our community how to safely store and use their legally obtained handguns,” said Beth Dombrowsky, managing director of the PSC and the law enforcement complex.
“HACC has gotten a lot of positive community support for the Shumaker Public Safety Center (PSC) over the years in its role as Central Pennsylvania’s premier training facility for the region’s first responders. We want to reach out and fill the needs of those in the community now that the law enforcement complex has opened,” she said.
HACC continues to provide re-training for law enforcement personnel and also offers two full-time and a part-time municipal police academy annually at the law enforcement complex.
The schedule begins Sept. 9 with eight separate sessions of Basic Handgun Marksmanship and Safety for Civilians. Instructors are Tom Olsen, a retired sergeant from the Camp Hill Police Department and firearms instructor with more than 30 years of experience, and Steve Zawisky, an assistant district attorney, who has more than nine years of experience with the Dauphin County District Attorney’s office.
Participants who enroll are required to provide his or her own handgun, 50 rounds of manufacturer-approved ammunition (no re-loaded ammunition allowed), hearing and eye protection and a baseball-style hat. The cost of the course is $150. A certificate of participation and completion will be awarded.
