LANCASTER, Pa. – Artist Sara Frankel’s work transports viewers to a dark realm of imagination in her upcoming exhibit, “Playland,” in the Art Space at HACC’s Lancaster Campus through April 3, 2014.

The exhibit will be open Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-7 p.m., and Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

“For my work, I use an amalgam of found sources generated from the current and vintage pictures of mostly random people and places,” said Frankel, who is associate professor of drawing at the College of Charleston in Charleston, S.C.  The artist also was a HACC lecturer in painting and drawing from 1994-97. “From these sources I create new images of mostly children and adolescents who are frozen in, and defined by, ominous land and waterscapes.”

The artist goes on to describe her current approach: “Recently my “characters” navigate through dark, lush woods unaware of potential dangers, enigmatic spaces and their own tenuous relationships. Sometimes they engage in mysterious games for which the rules have been misplaced.”

She continued, “As if from fragmented memories or dreams, I reach for recurring themes in narratives about personal trial, awakening and nameless anxieties.”

Before joining the faculty at the College of Charleston in 2003, Frankel lectured and taught painting, drawing and design from 1993-2000 in Central Pennsylvania colleges, including the Pennsylvania School of Art & Design in Lancaster, Gettysburg College in Gettysburg and Dickinson College in Carlisle, as well as HACC. She also has taught at her alma mater, Yale University in New Haven, Conn.; the University of Connecticut in Storrs, Conn; Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn.; the University of Hawaii in Honolulu, Hawaii, and Assumption College in Worcester, Mass.

In addition to a MFA from Yale, Frankel has a BFA from the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa.

She has exhibited extensively in galleries and other venues on the East Coast and in California, Texas and Hawaii. Her recent exhibitions include Figures & Faces, a juried exhibition at the Pacific Art League in Palo Alto, Calif.; 1 x 1, an invitational exhibition at the Redux Contemporary Art Center in Charleston; the Annual Invitational Summer Show at the A.I.R. Gallery in New York; Show & Tell, a juried exhibition at the De Soto Row gallery in Savannah, Ga.; and The Water Series, a solo exhibition at the D’Alzon Library Gallery at Assumption College.
