Competition at regional campuses includes 24 local high schools

HARRISBURG – Hempfield High School finished first in the annual high school mathematics contest at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, with a student from Harrisburg Academy in Wormleysburg earning the individual first-place award.

The 24 high school teams in the recent competition were linked through interactive video at HACC's Harrisburg, Lancaster and Gettysburg campuses.

Harrisburg Academy placed second and Cumberland Valley High School placed third. Individual awards were given to the top 10 students with the highest scores.

In first place was Harrisburg Academy senior Michael Renqing Wang. Colin Pronovost, a senior at Hempfield High School, took second place. Coming in third was junior Josh Killian of Hempfield High School.

The remaining top 10 finishers and their high schools were: a three-way tie among Yeongho Shin, a sophomore from Cumberland Valley High School; David Kutz, a senior from Mechanicsburg High School; and Albert Taglieri, a junior from Spring Grove High School; David May, a sophomore from Harrisburg Academy; a tie between Sean Collins, a senior from Carlisle High School; and Joshua Eaton, a junior from Kennard-Dale High School; a four-way tie among Joshua Dixon, a sophomore from Ephrata High School; Ilija Marchenka a junior from Harrisburg Academy; David Lin, a junior from Dauphin County Technical School; and Maddy Waters, a junior from Lower Dauphin High School.

The students completed a series of mathematical problems coordinated by HACC's math faculty. They had to calculate answers working as a team, individually and in relays. This is the 24th year for the contest.

This year's participating high schools also included: Annville-Cleona, Camp Hill, Central Dauphin, Delone Catholic, Greenwood, Hershey, Hershey Christian School, J. P. McCaskey, Middletown, Northeastern, Northern, Shippensburg, Susquenita, and Upper Dauphin.
