Donors recognized for support of construction, renovations at Sen. John J. Shumaker Public Safety Center
Approximately 200 people gathered at the Sen. John J. Shumaker Public Safety Center on HACC’s Harrisburg Campus to unveil a 9/11 memorial made out of a concrete-encased piece of steel taken from the rubble after the collapse of the twin towers of the World Trade Center. The approximately12-by-4-foot beam acknowledges all those who responded to the attacks, including the PA Task Force 1 local responders who were among the first from Pennsylvania to arrive on the scene on Sept. 11, 2001.
The program also gave special recognition to the many donors who contributed to construction of the Sen. Jeffrey E. Piccola Law Enforcement Complex and renovations to the Sen. John J. Shumaker Public Safety Center.
The ceremony was led by HACC President John J. “Ski” Sygielski, who was joined by several speakers, including Randy Padfield, HACC interim director of fire and emergency medical services; former Pennsylvania Sen. Jeffrey E. Piccola; George P. Hartwick III, Dauphin county commissioner; Donald Konkle, executive director of the Pennsylvania Fire and Emergency Services Institute; and Chief Thomas C. Carter of the Harrisburg Bureau of Police.
After the ceremony, visitors viewed public safety training demonstrations, took self-guided tours of the law enforcement complex with its indoor, 25-lane John Crain Kunkel Firing Range and walked through the outdoor training grounds.
