HARRISBURG, Pa. – HACC Theatre will perform a modern interpretation of Sophocles’ classic Greek play, “Antigone,” Thursday, March 6 through Sunday, March 9, 2014, at the Rose Lehrman Arts Center’s Studio Theatre on the Harrisburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.

Each of HACC Theatre’s shows during the 2013-14 “Season of Moral Ambiguity” share a common theme: the sometimes questionable choices or lack of clarity in ethical decision-making.

“Antigone,” freely adapted by Emily Mann and directed by HACC Theatre Instructor Dave Olmsted, is set in the aftermath of Greece’s civil war. Antigone battles her uncle, Creon, for the right to bury her dead brother, despite his decree that to do so would mean her public execution. Viewed as a contest between equally determined and fierce competitors, both right and both wrong, HACC’s performance draws modern inspiration from Greece’s neighbor Syria to influence artistic choices in the production. Traditional Greek styles of theatre will also be adapted for a contemporary audience.

“Although the original play was written over 2,000 years ago, the themes are still relevant today as there are over 40 different countries dealing with civil war, insurgencies and unrest,” said Olmsted. “Antigone shows that no matter the time period or location, vengeance will breed vengeance.”

The cast of HACC’s ‘Antigone’ includes Joshua Dieter, as Creon; Giulia Einhorn, as Aide; Jacob Pomeroy, as Guard; Mabel Schreffler, as Antigone; Allison Chester, as Ismene; Ryan Goodling, as Haemon; Adam Straw, as Teiriesias; Leah Miller, as Eurydice; Matthew Mercado, as Messenger Antigone; Caitlyn Davis, as Messenger Haemon; and Rashuan Bailey, as Messenger Eurydice.

‘Antigone’ will be performed for the public on Friday, March 7 and Saturday, March 8 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee on Sunday, March 9 at 2 p.m. The student night performance is Thursday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m., when all tickets will be $5 with valid student ID. Tickets for all other performances are $15 for adults and $10 for senior citizens and students.
