HACC Makes Learning Something New a Reality for New Year’s Resolution Makers
 
With more than 150 programs, five campuses, online degrees and job training classes, HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, is making it easy to accomplish the resolution “learn something new.”
 
On Jan. 6, 2016, from 8 a.m.-6 p.m., current and future students can visit HACC’s campuses in Gettysburg, Harrisburg, Lancaster, Lebanon or York for Open Enrollment Day.
 
HACC offers an extensive range of programs to satisfy a broad spectrum of the students’ needs, including, but not limited to: college classes in high schools, weekend workshops, associate degree programs, job training programs, English as a Second Language (ESL) and GED preparation and testing.
 
During the event, attendees can learn about these opportunities and complete the entire enrollment process to start spring classes on Jan. 19. Individuals can complete the free application, meet with an advisor and register for classes in one day.
 
Also, thanks to the HACC Foundation, future students can enter a chance to win $1,000 for their spring and/or summer 2016 tuition and fees at HACC while at the event.

HACC Student Awarded Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Scholarship
 
Julie Greenhalgh, a business management student at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, has been selected to receive a $1,000 scholarship from Phi Theta Kappa international honor society as a Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholar.
 
Greenhalgh of Peach Bottom, York County, was selected by a group of independent judges based on scholastic achievement, community service and leadership potential.
 
As a student at HACC’s Lancaster Campus, Greenhalgh has been a member of HACC’s Alpha Nu Omega Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa since December 2014. Greenhalgh, who anticipates graduating with degrees in both business studies and business management in 2017, said, “I hope to end up in a position in administration. I am fascinated with the idea of servant leadership and have been since my first business class at HACC in the spring of 2014.”
 
On receiving the scholarship, Greenhalgh said, “I don’t have enough words to explain what this meant to me, to us as a family . . . it gave me courage, strength and promise for the future.”
 
Greenhalgh is among 207 Phi Theta Kappa members worldwide selected as 2015 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholars. They were chosen from among more than 1,100 applicants.
 
The funds provided by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation aid college completion and provide students with the opportunity to engage in Phi Theta Kappa’s programs and develop skills to become future leaders in their communities, according to Nancy Rieves, CEO of the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation.
 
Phi Theta Kappa, headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi, is the largest honor society in higher education with 1,285 chapters on college campuses in all 50 of the United States, U.S. territorial possessions and eight sovereign nations.

Prints from Poland at HACC’s Rose Lehrman Art Gallery
 
The Rose Lehrman Art Gallery on the Harrisburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, will feature the print-based work of artists from The Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, Poland, from Jan. 15 through Feb. 12, 2016.
 
The artists, all professors of graphic art, will display a wide range of printmaking through various media, including:
 
  • Tomasz Daniec – Media: printmaking, painting and drawing
  • Joanna Kaiser – Media: drawing, painting and printmaking
  • Bogdan Miga – Medium: printmaking
  • Henryk Ozog – Media: printmaking and painting
  • Mateusz Otreba – Media: printmaking and drawing
  • Piotr Panasiewicz – Media: printmaking, painting and graphic design
  • Marcin Surzycki – Media: printmaking and drawing
  • Krzysztof Tomalski – Medium: printmaking
  • Darek Vasina – Media: drawing, painting, printmaking and illustration
 
A lecture by Kristi Arnold, exhibit curator, will be held on Jan. 21, 2016, at 5:30 p.m. in Whitaker Hall, Room 214. A reception will immediately follow in the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery from 6-7:30 p.m.

Lancaster Police Chief Named to HACC Board of Trustees
Keith R. Sadler of Lancaster was appointed on Dec. 1, 2015, to the Board of Trustees of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, to represent the College’s service area in Lancaster. Sadler’s term runs through June 30, 2017.

Sadler, who has 34 years of law enforcement experience, has been chief of police since 2008 for the City of Lancaster Bureau of Police. In this role, he plans, directs and oversees training and assignments.

Sadler is an adjunct professor in criminal justice at Alvernia University in Reading and formerly was an adjunct professor at HACC’s Lancaster Campus. He also serves as a member of Pennsylvania’s Municipal Police Officer’s Education and Training Commission (MPOETC). His community involvement includes the Asian Federation of Pennsylvania, and serving as a board member to the Domestic Violence Services of Lancaster County and the Lancaster Emergency Medical Services Association.

He holds an associate degree in justice from the Community College of Philadelphia and a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s degree in urban education, both from Alvernia University.
