• HACC Students Named to 2015 All-PA Community College Academic Team

HACC Students Named to 2015 All-PA Community College Academic Team
 
Five students from HACC were named to the 2015 All-PA Community College Academic Team.
 
The program recognizes an exceptional group of community college students who have achieved academic excellence and demonstrated a commitment to their colleges and communities. This year’s All-PA Team consists of 44 outstanding students from across the 14 community colleges across Pennsylvania. They were recognized at a banquet at the Harrisburg Hilton on April 13, 2015.
 
In addition, Pennsylvania’s community colleges partner with the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) universities to provide scholarships to two All-PA Academic Team members from each Pennsylvania community college. The scholarships may be used at any of the 14 PASSHE institutions. HACC students Bryce Detweiler and Quyen Do were awarded scholarships to continue their education.
 
HACC’s All-PA Team members included:
 
Bryce Detweiler of Hummelstown will graduate in May 2015 and transfer to West Chester University, where he will major in communications studies. He eventually intends to seek a master’s degree, although he has yet to decide whether it will be in communications or art history. He runs a business as a “mid-century modern art and design dealer” and is a photojournalist and podcast producer for his local newspaper, the Hummelstown Sun. He won the “Best Message Award” in the Great American No-Bull Challenge Anti-Bullying Film Competition, as well as the American Association of University Women’s Gateway to Equity Award.
 
Quyen Do of Lancaster will attend Millersville University this fall to pursue a degree in mathematics and aspires to earn a master’s degree. She works as a math tutor at HACC’s Lancaster Campus, for which she earned the Above and Beyond tutoring award. She also works as a volunteer tax preparer through the United Way and was recently hired by a local bank after participating in a HACC job fair. Her dream job is using math and statistics to help organizations solve problems and organize operations and cooking is her “favorite stress remedy.”
 

Christine Hallman of Myerstown will graduate from HACC in May 2015 and continue her studies at Lebanon Valley College. She enjoys spending her time serving others through community activities at her church and providing music programs to local nursing homes. She returned to school after raising and homeschooling her children. She plans to earn a bachelor’s degree and possibly a seminary degree in order to pursue full-time ministry through her church.
 




Theresa Kings of New Holland has made the Dean’s List every semester she’s been at HACC and has done so while working full time in a group home for people living with brain injuries – a job that she says has taught her much about her field of study. She will transfer to Millersville University in the fall to study psychology and aspires to earn a master’s degree in mental health counseling.

HACC’s Massage Therapy Program to Host Job Fair and Free Act 31 Training
 
HACC’s Massage Therapy Program will host a job fair and free Act 31 mandated training on June 1, 2015, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Glatfelter Community Room in the Cytec Building on HACC’s York Campus.
 
Attendees can interact with more than 15 potential employers in the industry, learn about HACC’s Massage Therapy Program, enter prize drawings and receive free Act 31 training. The job fair will take place from 10-11:30 a.m.
The Act 31 training fulfills the new child abuse training requirements for individuals seeking new or renewed massage therapy licenses. The free Act 31 training will be offered from noon to 3 p.m.
 
HACC’s Massage Therapy Program has courses beginning in July 2015 at the York Campus and in September 2015 at the Harrisburg Campus.

Adams County Artist’s Work Showcased at HACC’s Gettysburg Campus
 
Artist Jill Rakowicz’s encaustic (hot wax painting), oil and paper artwork is on display through June 4, 2015, in the main gallery hallway of HACC’s Gettysburg Campus.
 
Rakowicz, who has taught art for 10 years to elementary students in the Littlestown Area School District, uses her students’ sketches and mark-making in their sketchbooks to build layers of paper, wax and drawings. In doing so, she discovers shapes and lines that meld into each other, across the surface and throughout her layers to create distinctive artwork.
 
“Every person builds a vocabulary of visual symbols that can be used to communicate in various ways. Children’s symbols often reflect certain developmental stages and often represent actual beings/events/images,” Rakowicz said. “By breaking their drawings down into lines and shapes by random choosing, I attempt to find a balance of drawing without any rational control with an instinctive need to connect the shapes.”
 
A Gettysburg resident, Rakowicz is pursuing a master’s degree in educational program design from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She has an art degree from Shippensburg University in Shippensburg and art education certification from Kutztown University in Kutztown. She has won awards of merit and best in show for her works in encaustics. Her work has been exhibited in the Pennsylvania communities of Chambersburg, Gettysburg, Lancaster, Shippensburg, State College and York.
