HACC Ushers in 2015-16 Academic Year 
 
HACC President John J. “SKI” Sygielski, Ed.D., welcomed the beginning of a new academic year in Convocation ceremonies held Aug. 18 and Aug. 19, 2015, online and at all five campuses of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.
 
During his remarks, Dr. Ski celebrated HACC’s past accomplishments and encouraged colleagues and students to look forward at the exciting things yet to come. “We want HACC to be the first choice in quality and higher education. Therefore, we need to ensure that our learning is creative, rigorous and has global awareness and diversity. The work that we do is very important. We are here to change lives.”
 
Sygielski continued, “Our students are our hope for the future. I have confidence in our students that they will lead the way for us to enjoy a much brighter tomorrow. Can we be their hope? Judging from our past successes here at HACC, I resoundingly say, yes we can!”

HACC Ranked Fifth in Digital Community Colleges in National Survey
 
HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, is a Top 10 Digital Community College, according to an annual survey by a national research and advisory institute.
 
HACC ranked fifth in the 2014-15 Digital Community Colleges survey conducted by the Center for Digital Education. HACC ranked seventh in the 2013-14 survey in its category, large colleges with 10,000 or more students.
 
According to the institute, the survey analyzes how community colleges use digital technologies to improve services to students, faculty, staff and the community at large.
 
HACC Board of Trustees Elects New Trustee
 
Teresa D. Williams, Ed.D., of Mechanicsburg is the newest member of the Board of Trustees of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. Williams, whose term runs through June 30, 2018, is also a member of the Board’s educational planning committee.
 
Williams retired in 2011 as program director of the Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit 13, where her career in various instructional and administrative roles spanned 35 years. She was named Lancaster-Lebanon IU 13 Administrator of the Year in 1999.
 
Williams currently serves on dissertation committees at Immaculata University and Widener University. She is a former member of the board of directors of Compass Mark, an agency of the Lancaster County Council on Drug and Alcohol Abuse, and a past treasurer of the statewide Nonpublic School Services Administrators Association.
 
She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in elementary education from Millersville State College (now Millersville University) and a doctorate in educational leadership from Immaculata University.
 
HACC Foundation Board Elects Officers, Accepts Resignations
 
Leadership of the HACC Foundation Board of Directors was undertaken by Kenneth Shutts, chairman, and Stephen Staman, vice chairman, on July 1, 2015. They will serve in those roles through June 30, 2018.
 
In August 2013, Shutts, a HACC alumnus, was elected to the Board. In December 2014, he retired from Penn National Insurance, where he served as president and chief executive officer. He has a juris doctor’s degree from the University of Baltimore School of Law and a bachelor’s degree in social science from the Pennsylvania State University.
 
Staman was elected to the Board in September 2012. He is employed as the vice president and senior commercial loan officer for Metro Bank and has more than 28 years of banking experience. He has a bachelor’s degree from Franklin and Marshall College and a master’s of business administration from the Philadelphia College of Textile and Science, where he graduated cum laude.
 
The Board has accepted the resignation of two members, Ernie Davis and Kristin Scofield.
 
Davis joined the Board in 1989, serving on the Bylaws Committee, Development Committee, Investment Committee, Nominating Committee and Planned Giving Committee during his 26-year tenure. He established the Ernest P. Davis Scholarship Endowment that provides financial assistance to HACC students who reside in Harrisburg and graduated from Harrisburg High School. He is highly respected within the Harrisburg community and has served the Dauphin County community for many years as a member and/or officer of numerous nonprofit organizations.
 
Having joined the Board in 2012, Scofield resigned at the end of her three-year term to spend more time with her family. Scofield served on the Nominating Committee and Strategic Planning Committee.

As a former employee of the State Museum of Pennsylvania and community volunteer, she worked to ensure that education and the arts are well and thriving in the Harrisburg community. Scofield has been a benefactor of HACC for almost 20 years.


‘Hollow’ Exhibit of Ceramics, Mixed Media Opens Sept. 4 at Rose Lehrman Art Gallery
 
“Hollow,” a ceramic and mixed-media exhibit by Matt Wilt, artist and assistant professor at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York, will be on display in the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery on the Harrisburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, from Sept. 4 through Oct. 1, 2015.
 
A lecture will be given by the artist on Oct.1, at 5:30 p.m. in Whitaker Hall 214 with a reception immediately following from 6:30-7:30 p.m.
 
Wilt’s work is inspired by a mix of historical Moche ceramics of Pre-Columbian Peru and contemporary culture.
 
Moche ceramics are a powerful influence, both technically complex and sculpturally compelling. Moche artists drew from every facet of life: plants, animals, architecture, the human body and the divine and mundane of existence. Wilt strives to work in a similar manner, combining objects and forms from the diverse culture and society in which he lives. Initially, this approach resulted in vessels derived from street trash such as mufflers and Styrofoam cups, buoy forms on the Delaware River and the urban architecture of Philadelphia.
 
In recent years, Wilt’s work has become less vessel-oriented. Often his forms will seem to suggest a specific function or use, but the use is ambiguous; a hybrid of the known world with a less concrete reality.
 
Gallery hours are Monday-Friday from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday from 5-7 p.m. or by appointment.

The Rose Lehrman Art Gallery received state arts funding support through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
