Exhibit by artist James Fuhrman opens Feb. 29; public lecture, reception March 23
  LANCASTER, Pa. – “Contemplative Spaces – I Make What I Am,” an exhibit of multiple media by James Fuhrman, will be on display Feb. 29-April 12, 2016, in the Art Space Gallery in the East building of the Lancaster Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. The exhibit will feature a 21-foot long stainless steel sculpture, printed poetry and paintings by the artist.

A reception for the artist will be held March 23 from 3-5 p.m. in the Art Space. During the reception, Fuhrman will give a talk in room E203 as part of the Humanities Symposium, “Ecology: Connecting with Nature.” The public is invited to attend both the events.

According to Fuhrman’s artist statement, his “work is infused with a sense of deep geological timelessness . . . and connection to the ground. The textures expose, literally and figuratively, the inner essence of the pieces lending a feeling for mass and rootedness that has emerged from my strong sense of the earth – supporting, anchoring, continuing."

Fuhrman’s study of Martha Graham dance forms led to his calligraphic ink paintings and later the study of Japanese Zen ens? (circle) forms. His sculpture installations became gathering spaces for spontaneous groups and organized community happenings in Ithaca, New York; Bellingham, Washington; Wallingford, Pennsylvania, and Ridgely, Maryland. He has had commissions and exhibited his work in Brazil, Japan and Scotland and many U.S. sites including Miami, New York and Philadelphia.

Fuhrman, of Glenmoore, Pennsylvania, earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a master’s degree from Temple University, both in Philadelphia. He studied dance technique under the direction of Martha Graham from 1980-83.
