HARRISBURG, Pa. – For the fourth consecutive year, the Respiratory Therapist Program at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, has been recognized by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC).
Last month, the program received the Distinguished Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) Credentialing Success Award from CoARC. To qualify for this award, programs must have three or more years of outcome data; hold accreditation without a progress report; document RRT credentialing success of 90 percent or above; and meet CoARC thresholds for Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credentialing success, attrition and positive job placement.
Through HACC’s program, students learn to provide hands-on care to individuals such as accident victims, the elderly, children and premature infants who are recovering from various medical conditions. Students are taught how to analyze blood specimens, use mechanical ventilation and administer medication.
HACC Joins ‘Stop the Bleed’ National Campaign
HARRISBURG, Pa. – “Bleeding Control Basics,” a free course to educate the public and teach life-saving techniques, will be offered Aug. 9, 2017, at the Midtown Trade and Technology Center of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.
The course will be offered 9-11:30 a.m. at Midtown 2, 1500 N. Third St. It is designed for security personnel, teachers, caregivers, church groups, business leaders and others in public gathering places. Instructors are members of the emergency medical services (EMS) unit at HACC’s Senator John J. Shumaker Public Safety Center (PSC).
Participants will be taught:
According to the American College of Surgeons and the Committee on Trauma, uncontrolled bleeding is the number one cause of preventable death from trauma. A person can bleed to death in less than five minutes, which makes it difficult for emergency medical responders to act fast enough once they arrive. Because bystanders and nonmedical personnel are typically on the scene before emergency medical responders, this nationwide initiative aims to educate them on how to control bleeding, with the goal of saving lives.

HACC Announces Spring 2017 Full-Time Dean’s List
HARRISBURG, Pa. - HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, has named 1,395 students to the spring 2017 full-time dean’s list.
The full-time dean’s list recognizes students who achieved a 3.25 grade point average or higher in college-level classes and completed a minimum of 12 credits during the spring 2017 term.

HACC Board of Trustees Seats New Members
HARRISBURG, Pa. – The HACC Board of Trustees has four new members to represent the communities in the 10-county footprint served by HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.
They are Lori Brandt of Lebanon who will serve through June 30, 2019, and Mauree Gingrich of Hershey, John Kubeika of Enola and Stephen Reed of Harrisburg, who will serve through June 30, 2018.
Brandt, a 1994 HACC alumna, graduated in 1985 from Central Penn College in Enola and earned a bachelor’s degree in 2011 from Albright College in Reading. During her more than 20 years serving the senior population, Brandt has focused on marketing in continuing care retirement communities; personal care, independent and hospice organizations; and, most recently serves as outreach director for Albright’s LIFE Program in Lancaster, Lebanon and Lycoming.
Her community involvement includes board member and membership chair of the Community of Lebanon Association; steering committee chair of Senior Outreach Services; chair of the Lebanon County Age Wave Committee; treasurer of Northern Lebanon High School Basketball Boosters; and member of Trinity United Methodist Church and its staff parish relations committee.
Gingrich, who retired from public service in 2016, represented Lebanon County’s 101st District in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives for 14 years. During this time, she served as chair of the House Labor and Industry Committee for the 2015-16 legislative session and other leadership positions on the Appropriations, Aging and Older Adult Services and House Rules committees. She also was appointed to the Bipartisan Local Government Commission. Gingrich previously served 12 years on the Palmyra Borough Council, including nine years as council president, and was a member of the borough planning commission.
Before her election to statewide office, Gingrich was the owner of Mature Market Concepts, a qualitative market research company focusing on the older adult consumer. Prior to opening her own market research company, she was the director of marketing at Cornwall Manor in Cornwall. Gingrich is a founding member of the Lebanon County Commission for Women. She was the recipient of the National Federation of Independent Business’s Guardian of Small Business Award for 14 consecutive years and the recipient of the Children’s Hero Award from the Lebanon County Sexual Assault Resource Counseling Center (SARCC) and the Joe Allegrini Children Hero Board, of which she is now a member. She has been nominated to serve on the Dauphin County ARC Board of Trustees.
Gingrich served on the Board of Trustees of the Lebanon Valley Chamber of Commerce, was past chair of the Leadership Lebanon Valley Board and is a recipient of the prestigious Athena Award, given annually in recognition of women in leadership roles who encourage other women to achieve their potential.
Kubeika, vice president of insurance at AAA Central Penn, previously was chief sales and marketing officer in charge of Zurich/Farmers Pennsylvania insurance distribution channels and president of an independent insurance agency. His community involvement includes serving on the University of Scranton President’s Business Council, Leadership Harrisburg Area Board of Directors and the Historic Harrisburg Association Board of Directors. He is a past member of the East Pennsboro Area Board of School Directors.
Reed, former mayor of Harrisburg for 28 years, is CEO and managing member of Reed Strategic Advisors, LLC, a private consulting firm. His prior public service also includes Dauphin County Commissioner and state representative.
Reed is founder or co-founder of multiple institutions over a 35-year span, including The Harrisburg University of Science and Technology, Science and Technology High School, Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts, a professional AA baseball team, FNB Field (formerly known as Metro Bank Park), the Harrisburg Hilton Hotel and Towers and the Harrisburg Crowne Plaza Hotel. He also is founder or co-founder of the American Society for Public Administration regional chapter and Capital Region Economic Development Corporation.
Reed also is the recipient of five honorary doctorate degrees and over 300 awards and recognitions for international, national, state and regional leadership and progress. An author and lecturer, his speaking engagements have taken him across the world and the U.S.

- Bleeding control with bandages
- Opening an airway to allow an injury victim to breathe
