HACC Celebrates 2018 President’s Award Recipients
HARRISBURG, Pa. – Each year, HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, presents the President’s Award to employees who provide exceptional service to the College and its students. Recipients are chosen based on the following criteria:
- Demonstrated initiative, creativity and innovation in implementing and/or carrying out a project
- Efforts that enhanced the College’s reputation
- Efforts that resulted in increased efficiency or effectiveness with collegewide implication
- Efforts that resulted in cost savings to the College
This year, 35 employees were nominated, and six award recipients were celebrated for demonstrating excellence. Award recipients were recognized at a ceremony held at HACC’s Harrisburg Campus, which was attended by members of HACC’s Board of Trustees, members of the President’s Cabinet, nominees, award recipients, their supervisors and colleagues who submitted nominations.
Award recipients receive a certificate of recognition that acknowledges their contributions to the College, as well as a merit award.
The recipients of the 2018 President’s Award were:
Jennie Baar, dean, academic affairs, HACC’s Harrisburg Campus, was nominated for being an exemplary leader and tireless advocate for the College. She coordinated the Capital Area Science and Engineering Fair, developed a partnership with the Geisinger Lewistown Hospital School of Nursing and increased enrollments in the College in the High School and Dual Enrollment programs with sponsoring school districts. Baar is a respected and inspiring leader who advocates for the well-being of students and supports the growth and development of employees.
Mallary DeSantis, assistant professor, mathematics, was nominated for her creative and innovative redesign of HACC’s developmental math curriculum. Based on a successful pilot course, the redesign will be implemented collegewide. DeSantis is committed to improving student success and providing students with the opportunity to improve their confidence, learn and apply new mathematics skills and successfully move forward to more advanced mathematics courses.
Ragin El-Shater, coordinator, graduation, was nominated for her efforts in implementing changes to the College’s degree requirements for the 2018-19 academic year. El-Shater’s work preserving the integrity and accuracy of the curriculum and student records reflects directly on students’ experiences with HACC. El-Shater’s attention to detail and dedication shows she is aware of the impact the curriculum has on the student experience and strives to give every student a positive experience.
Ron Rebuck, program director, nursing, HACC’s Harrisburg Campus, was nominated for his efforts to enhance the College’s reputation through consistent professionalism and passion for the students and employees in the Nursing Program. Rebuck, a HACC nursing alumnus, shared his knowledge and expertise as a faculty member and now in his current role. Rebuck has established the outstanding reputation of the program and is a mentor to those in the Nursing Program and others throughout Pennsylvania.
Timothy Smith, assistant director, tutoring and testing, was nominated for his research to create and pilot an in-class tutoring program at HACC’s Lancaster Campus. He displayed a high level of creativity and collaboration while managing and promoting a new concept that was extremely successful. The tutoring services have resulted in improved course pass rates, higher enrollment rates and increased visits to the learning center for additional resources. The program is being considered for collegewide expansion as a beneficial resource to all HACC students.
Bob Stakem, director, the Senator John J. Shumaker Public Safety Center, was recognized for his initiative and creativity in the development of an entry-level fire and emergency medical responder training program. The program was successfully piloted at Cumberland Valley High School and is offered throughout the state, including high schools in Adams and Franklin counties.

Does YOUR Mama Dance? Jim Messina at HACC’s Live at Rose Lehrman
Messina brings his band for a retrospective tour showcasing some of his greatest hits: “Your Mama Don’t Dance,” “Angry Eyes” and “You Better Think Twice.”
Messina’s musical style ranges from the country rock sound of his early career with Buffalo Springfield and Poco to his folk rock/pop style with Kenny Loggins.
Zeroday Brewing Co. will serve beverages and HACC’s Chef’s Apprentice will provide heavy hors d’oeuvres during a pre-show reception beginning at 5:45 p.m. in the Rose Garden. Pre-show reception tickets are limited and include the cost of the performance.

Paintings at HACC’s Art Space Invite ‘Endless Readings’
Reisman writes in her artist statement, “I want my paintings to be worlds unto themselves, where you feel that you are experiencing something for the first time even though it is familiar. I want them to unfold slowly so the viewer encounters all the relationships in multiple ways, providing endless readings. I want there to be an honesty and truth to my endeavor, a poetry and sensibility that is truly mine.”
Over the years, Reisman has exhibited in galleries and group exhibitions throughout the country. Her teaching experience includes positions at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, and other academic institutions.
Reisman received her bachelor of fine arts from Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, and a master of fine arts in printmaking from Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut. In 2009, she received a Hassam, Speicher, Betts and Symons Purchase Fund Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
