New Programs, Initiatives Launched at HACC
HARRISBURG, Pa. – Students attending classes this fall at
HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, have additional resources and opportunities for success in their studies and activities.

In addition, future students will find theme-based
campus tours and virtual events to provide experiences that meet their specific needs and goals.

Programs Added, Revised
Among the new and revised programs in HACC’s line-up of approximately 100 career and transfer associate degree, certificate and diploma programs are:
  • Addiction and Recovery Services Program – This new associate in applied science degree program provides a pathway for those with a passion for motivating people to make positive changes in their lives.
  • Advanced Automotive Specialty Skills Diploma – Students who have completed the Automotive Technology Certificate Program will find this stackable credential as a pathway to gain skills in powertrains and control systems.
  • Sections of anatomy and physiology, English as a Second Language (ESL), statistics, and trigonometry classes are using Open Educational Resources (OER), teaching, learning and research resources that are a free alternative to costly text books.
  • Revised English as a Second Language (ESL) courses allow for a more customized instructional experience based on the student’s need. The new sequence improves student progression between workforce and credit courses.
  • The ESL Program offered by the Office of Workforce Development and Continuing Education is participating in HACC’s pilot of HyFlex technology that allows students to attend in person while their classmates attend remotely from as far away as Mali, Panama and Vietnam.
  • The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Unit is participating in a Healthcare Advance Program to give York County School of Technology students the opportunity to experience HACC health career programs.
  • A new full-time emergency medical technician (EMT) program repeats every six weeks to provide a continuous opportunity for displaced workers to gain an industry credential in a short period of time, or for employers to send new employees to HACC for credentials.
  • A new Advanced EMT to Paramedic pathway begins this fall.
  • The College’s multi-class contract with WellSpan Health starts this fall with a fully paid opportunity for WellSpan Health employees in Chambersburg, Lancaster and York to become medical assistants.
  • A new course in clinical documentation improvement trains students in the Medical Coding Specialist Program on how to ensure documentation of medical procedures and encounters are fully and accurately recorded.

Enhancements to Learning
Classroom renovations and implementation of various software tools aimed at improving educational success include:
  • Communications classrooms collegewide were renovated to provide a consistent instructional recording experience regardless of campus location. Funded by the HACC Foundation, this launch is the culmination of three years of planning and implementation.
  • Research appointments with faculty librarians are now accessible with the click of one button, making it easier for students to use this resource.
  • Implementation of Guided Pathways, an advising and coaching practice, ensures that students receive proactive guidance aligned with critical decision points in their academics.
  • Students receiving additional support with Degree Works, a web-based, degree-monitoring tool, helps keep them on track with requirements needed to complete for graduation.
  • A College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP) pilot initiative focused on serving multilingual students is underway. CLEP exams let students test out of introductory courses and move to advanced courses toward a degree.
  • Accommodate by Simplicity, an online case management system, implemented this fall makes it easier to facilitate student requests for accommodations and keep faculty informed.
  • A new Survival Guide for students with disabilities is continually updated to provide comprehensive resources in a single location.

Extracurricular Opportunities
College is more than classrooms and textbooks, and HACC students are encouraged to
get involved in extracurricular activities. Opportunities include, but are not limited to:
  • HACC Hawks Esports are back in action as the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Esports fall competition is underway. Follow the games live at twitch.tv/haccesports.
  • Student veterans and military-connected students are invited to join the revitalization of HACC’s chapter of the Student Veterans of America (SVA). To join or for more information, please email SVA@hacc.edu.
  • HACC is celebrating the launch of The Copper Quill and The HawkEye, online media sites featuring student contributions.
  • The Rose Lehrman Art Gallery is offering a virtual line-up of shows, lectures and exhibitions that are available open to the public.

Nonacademic Support Services
HACC’s
Consultation, Advocacy, Referrals and Empowerment (CARE) Center provides nonacademic assistance to students with immediate needs such as child care, food and housing insecurities, mental health and social services.
  • A grant from the Student Government Association (SGA) allows the CARE Center to expand assistance to include transportation.
  • The CARE Center has implemented a two-week follow up with each student to ensure the provided resources are adequate and to determine if new needs have arisen. This helps guarantee that students are not falling through the cracks and are receiving the nonacademic support they need.
  • A change in federal law has made more students temporarily eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) during the pandemic. Students with $0 expected family contribution on their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) or found eligible for work study may now be eligible for SNAP.
