HARRISBURG, Pa. – Individuals with a passion for helping others on their path to recovery can enroll in a new Addiction and Recovery Services associate degree program at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.

The specialized program prepares graduates for entry-level work in drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers and recovery centers, working directly with clients.

The program covers topics such as:
  • Issues surrounding alcohol and substance abuse
  • Available treatments
  • Crisis and brief intervention counseling
  • Drug and alcohol screening and assessment

Students will be taught counseling approaches and how to identify symptoms and behaviors associated with substance abuse. HACC’s program also includes field training where students gain knowledge and skills in a workplace setting.

Upon completion of the program, graduates may choose to continue their education and transfer their HACC credits to a four-year college or university.

According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for substance abuse, behavioral disorder and mental health counselors is projected to grow by 25% from 2019-2029. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic has presented serious challenges to individuals in recovery from substance abuse, generating demand for more skilled individuals in the field.
