Hear firsthand from HACC students on finding their success through the Bucknell Community College Scholars Program:
What was the best part of Bucknell Community College Scholars Program (BCCSP)?
The best part of the BCCSP for me is the connection with the professors/faculty.
What were challenges?
The challenge was time management; how to balance between social life and workload.
How were the classes the same or different from HACC?
The classes were discussion based, the pace is fast and intense. It's harder than HACC classes.
What is the best recommendation you can give to a future BCCSP scholar?
Trust yourself, try your best and work hard. Everything in the program is manageable as long as you have a clear schedule and you can follow your schedule. There are many scholars who finished the program successfully.
What was the best part of Bucknell Community College Scholars Program (BCCSP)?
The community that I found within the cohort. I have developed profoundly meaningful relationships that have helped me become a better version of myself.
What were challenges?
For myself, as a nontraditional student, it was living in a dorm for six weeks.
How were the classes the same or different from HACC?
They were different in that one of my classes was discussion based, which allowed us to solidify our understanding of the materials through open discussion and sharing of real-life examples and questions. They were the same in that one of my classes was lecture based and felt very similar to HACC.
What is the best recommendation you can give to a future BCCSP scholar?
Be yourself, be open-minded, and be confident in your abilities! I came to the summer program unsure of what experience(s) I may have and if I’d be able to manage the coursework. It ended up being one of the most rewarding experiences of my life! Be diligent and don’t lose sight of the study skills that allowed you to succeed at HACC - they will similarly set you up for success at Bucknell. Also, take advantage of the many opportunities to ask for help if you find yourself struggling. Office hours are your friend!
What is your current status with BU?
I am a full-time, first semester junior pursuing dual majors in psychology and women’s and gender studies.
What was the best part of BCCSP?
The best part of BCCSP for myself was the feeling I had after completing the program. I say this because this program challenges you in many ways that make you go through many emotions and phases in such a short period of time. I had the opportunity to grow tremendously as a student and as a person in six weeks.
What were Challenges you faced?
The challenges I faced during BCCSP was learning how to adapt to the professors’ teaching styles and learning at a faster pace. In this program you will be learning a lot of information in a short period of time, while doing other activities during your weeks that take up a great amount of your time. Time management is something I always pride myself on, but this program shows you that you always have room to grow even in the areas you excel at.
How were the classes the same or different from HACC?
The classes at Bucknell were different from HACC due to the acceleration of the classes. This program is only six weeks and because of that you are doing double almost triple the amount of work that you would be expected to do at HACC. The way these classes were the same in my perspective is the way that the Professors’ care about the work you are doing. The professors at HACC have always been super supportive towards me and my education, and the Professors’ at Bucknell are no different.
What is the best recommendation you can give to a future BCCSP scholar?
The best recommendation I can give to a future BCCSP scholar would be to reach out for help. Every part of this program is meant to prepare you for coming to Bucknell as a full-time student. When you are going through the six-week program do not be afraid to ask for help, and to spend time with the professors and your TA’s because they are there to help you succeed. There is a lot of things that are expected of you during the program and time management is also a very important part. If there is anything that you can take away from my experience it would be manage your time wisely, ask for help always, and do not forget to enjoy yourself and have fun. This is a once in a lifetime experience so reach for the stars my friends!
