The Gettysburg Campus of Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC) will offer two classes for those interested in the minerals of the region.

Fun with Minerals will be offered on three Thursdays, April 15-29, from 7-9 p.m. at the HACC Campus, 731 Old Harrisburg Road, Gettysburg.

Participants will learn how to identify minerals using their physical properties. They will learn how minerals form and why they are found in certain areas. The area's minerals will be highlighted, which will include locations.

By participating in various hands-on activities, students also will learn how minerals are used today. A look through a microscope will uncover a world of small, beautiful crystals. Mining techniques also will be discussed.

Mineral Collecting in Adams and York Counties will be offered in one session, Saturday, April 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., beginning at the Gettysburg Campus.

This day-long class will include travel to a quarry, several abandoned mine sites and roadcuts to collect a variety of minerals from the area.

Stops include Valley Quarry-Gettysburg plant, Rossville roadcut, Dillsburg magnetite mines, and Comfort Mine area.

Hammers, goggles, paper and pencil and a bag to collect specimens are recommended. A small shovel or pick also is suggested for the Dillsburg stop.

Participants must supply their own lunch and beverage. Walking will be a minimum into these stops.

Registration for this class and information on many other community education, professional development, and workforce training classes is available in HACC's Spring 2004 Noncredit Course Schedule available at the HACC Web site below or by calling (717) 338-1010.
