Many of us entered the workforce before the personal computer was even invented, and now computer knowledge is essential on many jobs and often a necessary tool at home, and sometimes just plain fun. The Lancaster Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College, is helping fill our learning gap with noncredit computer courses offered in as little as one 3-hour session.

Digital Camera Basics is offered on Wednesday, Nov. 10, 6-9 p.m. The basic characteristics of a digital camera will be demonstrated and discussed. Students will learn to use a digital camera to practice photography fundamentals, perform simple editing of their pictures using desktop publishing software, and produce hardcopy photos, using several different printers. Students are encouraged to bring their personal digital camera, cables, and software to class. Prerequisite: Introduction to Windows or similar knowledge and experience.

Exploring the Internet will be offered Wednesday, Nov. 10, 6-9 p.m. This course covers the fundamentals of using Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator - navigating the Web using web addresses, Hyperlinks, and search engines. It also includes a discussion of Internet terminology. Prerequisite: Introduction to Windows or similar knowledge and experience.

Basic Typing is on four Mondays, Nov. 15-Dec. 6, 6-9 p.m. This course is designed to improve computer keyboard knowledge, typing speed, and accuracy. This course is an excellent starting point for those who have never taken a typing/keyboarding course.

Computer Basic Training is on four Tuesdays, Nov. 16-Dec. 7, 6-9 p.m. This course is designed to provide a basic introduction to PCs - computer terminology, how a computer functions, hardware, types of software, keyboard orientation, the Internet, and a brief introduction to Windows, word processing, spreadsheets and database.

Visual Basic for Applications Using Access, Part 1 starts on Monday, Nov. 22, and continues each Monday until Dec. 13, 6-9 p.m. This course covers basic language, syntax including variables, loops, logic condition testing, string manipulation, math, go subs, user defined functions and error handling. Prerequisite: Access I or similar knowledge and experience. Some programming background is strongly recommended.

Introduction to Flash MX is scheduled on four Tuesdays, Nov. 23-Dec. 14, 6-9 p.m. This course is designed to assist the student in creating animations they can publish on web pages or use as stand-alone files.

Students will view a Flash movie and modify the "stage," draw, paint and create custom build layers, and publish a Flash movie. Prerequisite: Introduction to Windows or similar knowledge and experience.

Help maintain your PC with Troubleshooting a PC on Wednesday, Dec. 1, 6-9 p.m. Microsoft system utilities such as Backup, Disk Cleanup, Disk Defragmenter, and ScanDisk will be discussed and demonstrated to provide a general overview of "first-line" maintenance that every PC owner should practice.

Other "tips and tricks" of maintaining, upgrading and "quick-fixing" a PC will be discussed, as well as an overview of virus protection software. Prerequisite: Introduction to Windows or similar knowledge and experience.

Access, Part 1 will be offered on three Wednesdays, Dec. 1-15, 6-9 p.m. This course introduces students to database concepts. They will learn to choose data types, set field properties, create tables to store data, learn to use queries to extract information, forms to facilitate data entry, and reports to publish data. Prerequisite: Introduction to Windows or similar knowledge and experience.

QuickBooks Pro - Intermediate is on three Wednesdays, Dec. 1-15, 6-9 p.m. In this course, students learn advanced topics such as customizing forms, using other QuickBooks accounts, creating reports and graphs, tracking and paying sales tax, processing payroll, and creating job estimates and job costing. Prerequisites: Completion of Introduction to QuickBooks or a practiced understanding of small business accounting methods.

Excel, Part 1 is in three Thursday sessions Dec. 2-16, 6-9 p.m. This course introduces students to creating, modifying, formatting, and printing spreadsheets, as well as working with basic formulas and functions and using styles and AutoFormats to enhance their worksheets. Prerequisite: Introduction to Windows or similar knowledge and experience.

A new course, Adobe Photoshop: Image Editing for Digital Camera Users, is offered on three Thursdays, Dec. 2-16, 6-9 p.m. This course covers basic image editing techniques for users of digital cameras. Prerequisite: Introduction to Windows or similar knowledge and experience.

A Desktop Publishing Workshop will be offered on two Mondays, Dec. 6-13, 6-9 p.m. Students are introduced to various desktop publishing software packages, such as Publisher, PageMaker, Illustrator, PhotoShop, and Acrobat Distiller. They will learn to produce simple publications using input devices such as a digital scanner and digital camera and output devices including laser, ink-jet, and photo-color printer. Prerequisite: Introduction to Windows or similar knowledge and experience.

Creating a Simple Web Site is one session on Tuesday, Dec. 7, 6-9 p.m. Students will be introduced to several "free" web sites that will allow them to build their own web page(s) at no cost. They also will receive an overview of Microsoft Publisher and FrontPage to construct simple web pages via the "wizard" utilities. A simple web site will be constructed during the class.

Students are encouraged to bring photos, logos, and other graphics that they would like to include on their personalized web site. Prerequisite: Introduction to Windows or similar nowledge and experience.
