Cumberland Valley High School mathematics team won the top prize at the 2005 High School Mathematics Contest hosted by HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College, April 29. This is the 15th year HACC has hosted the contest.

The Cumberland Valley team, Tim Heath (senior), Paul Russ (junior) and Michael lengel (sophomore) competed against 11 other Central Pennsylvania high school teams in arithmetic, algebra, geometry and trigonometry.

Hempfield High School, including Charles Smith (senior), Johnna Mahoney (junior) and Ethan Galebach (freshman) placed second.

Hershey High School, including Chris Lengerich (senior), David Katzman (junior) and Vincent Lee (sophomore) tied with Annville-Cleona High School team including Oliver Wagner (senior), Brooks Tomazin (junior) and Bradley Weaver (freshman) for third place.

Charles Smith, the senior from Hempfield High School, received the award for highest overall score. Johnna Mahoney of Hempfield placed second in overall high score, and Tim Heath of Cumberland Valley came in third.

HACC also hosts a computer contest each November for high school students as a way of developing the local talent throughout the counties that HACC serves.

"The HACC faculty design and participate in a number of events throughout the year to raise awareness of the programs available at HACC. Among the most popular with local high schools are the academic contests," said Ron Young, HACC vice president, Academic Affairs and Enrollment Management.

"The math contest provides an opportunity for talented high school students to showcase their skills and gain recognition for themselves and their school," said Young.

High schools participating in the event included Annville-Cleona High School, Cumberland Valley High School, Hempfield High School, Hershey High School, Lower Dauphin High School, Mechanicsburg High School, Middletown Area High School, Northern High School, Palmyra High School, Shippensburg High School, Susquenita High School and West York Area Senior High School.
