Fly Dance Company brings its high energy mix of hip-hop dance to the Rose Lehrman Arts Center on the Harrisburg campus of HACC on Friday, February 3 at 7:30 pm. Media sponsors for this event are PennLive.com and Hot 92.

Take four guys off the street and add a mix of hip-hop, classical and modern dance and you get FLY. High-energy, youthful, fun and exciting, this hip-hop group moves to all kinds of music . . . from Vivaldi to James Brown . . . a dance event for all ages.

FLY is an all-male dance company from Houston consisting of four talented young men under the direction of choreographer Kathy Wood. FLY's beginning dates back to 1993, when Kathy met and recruited hip-hop dancers performing at a Houston street festival. Kathy began an experiment combining hip-hop movement with classical music by Vivaldi resulting in a piece called Out of Context. This piece was an immediate success marking the beginning of the ten-year process developing the touring group that FLY is today. Since that beginning, FLY has toured extensively throughout the U.S., Mexico and Europe.

The company is known for its high-energy performances and clever staging to a variety of music including classical, jazz, pop, hip-hop, experimental, drumming, and live sound effects. FLY dances to the music of The Propellerheads, Debussy, James Brown, Michael Jackson, The Flamingoes, Nat King Cole, and Vivaldi. Labeled an artistic phenomenon, FLY crosses street dance with classical choreographic principles. Their technique is hip-hop-very creative and gymnastic. FLY's dance performances are family-friendly and cross all audience boundaries. The program is recommended for ages 7 and up.

Fly Dance Company will present "Takin' it to the Streets," a private school performance, on Thursday, February 2 at 12:15 pm for students at the Camp Curtain School. That evening, members of Fly Dance Company will be judging a hip-hop dance competition at HACC's Harrisburg Campus. Local dancers, who have already auditioned, will compete on Thursday night, February 2 from 6:30-9 pm at the Rose Lehrman Arts Center. Contestants must create and perform a 2 minute hip-hop dance. The competition is for amateur dancers ages 13-25 and the contest is for duos only. The grand prize for the winners will be two $200 Harrisburg Mall gift certificates and winners will have the chance to dance in the Fly Dance Company finale on February 3. The hip-hop dance competition is a free ticketed event open to the public. Please call 231-ROSE (7673) to get a free ticket.
