HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College, announced today that enrollment at its York Center for the spring semester has exceeded 1,000 students for the first time and continues to grow at a rapid rate. HACC started offering classes at three area high schools in the spring of 2003 with 225 students.

There are many reasons that the York Center, which is located at 2010 Pennsylvania Avenue, just north of Route 30 behind the Crossroads/Old Navy shopping center, is experiencing such a rapid rate of growth, according to Jean Treuthart, executive director.

"While students initially are attracted to the York Center because of our low tuition rate and program offerings, what they really come to appreciate is the personalized attention that they receive," Treuthart said. "Students appreciate the fact that HACC credits are accepted by colleges and universities throughout the country. In addition, HACC has formal transfer agreements with more than 60 colleges to smooth the transition to a four-year school - including local institutions like Penn State and Millersville University."

To accommodate the growing enrollment, HACC is in the midst of expanding the York Center's facilities.

"When students return for the spring semester, they will be greeted with a new bookstore, a wireless student commons and additional classroom space," Treuthart explained. "By the end of May, we also will add four new classrooms, a computer lab and additional office space, making it possible for us to accommodate up to 3,000 students."

Even with the York Center facility expansion, HACC will continue to offer evening classes at the Dallastown High School satellite location.

Day classes for HACC's spring semester begin January 11, while evening and Saturday classes begin the week of January 23. An eight-week summer session is scheduled to start in mid-June.
