A reception for the artist is scheduled 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21.
Figures inhabit the paintings - sometimes in public spaces, sometimes in more private settings, such as the artist's studio. In all the works there is a sense of the perspective being skewed thus making the viewer conscious of his or her own viewpoint.
Majumdar paints over a period of time until the paintings "begin to manifest a reality strong enough to compare to ours." He describes himself as an intuitive painter, adding the feeling of "being there" in the paintings is more important to him.
Majumdar was born in Calcutta, India. He received a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from Indiana University. Majumdar teaches painting at MICA and is represented by the Ann Nathan Gallery in Chicago. He has lectured and exhibited around the United States and in Nagoya, Japan and Rochefort en Terre, France. He has received a number of prestigious awards, including an Individual Artist Grant in Painting from the Maryland State Arts Council in 2006 and the Alfred and Trafford Klotts Residency Award to travel to Rochefort en Terre, France in 2005.

The Rose Lehrman Art Center Gallery exhibits are made possible, in part, through Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts (PPA), a local decision-making program of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts (PCA). The PCA is a state agency in the Governor's office, created by the Legislature in 1966 to encourage and promote the arts. Funding comes from the citizens of Pennsylvania through an annual state appropriation by the Legislature and from a federal grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. PPA is administered locally by Jump Street.
