Award-winning woodturner Bernard Hohlfeld of Blue Bell is the March featured artist at Radius, HACC gallery and museum shop.

Woodturning differs from other forms of woodworking because the wood is moving while a stationary tool (lathe) is used to cut and shape it. Many intricate shapes and designs can be made by turning wood.

Although Hohlfeld has studied drawing and painting and worked in stained glass, the inspiration that he finds in wood drives his creative passion.

"I use the different colors of the wood as a painter uses a pallet," said Hohlfeld. "I combine the natural colors of the wood to create a work of art that catches the eye and appeals to the soul."

His work first caught the eye of Jessica Lantz, Radius curator of arts and assistant manager, on display at the inaugural Pennsylvania Craft Exhibition in 2006.

"His craftsmanship is exceptional," she said. "What I found so impressive is that he creates light, airy pieces out of a material that usually is considered strong and solid."

In addition to having received numerous awards for his work, Hohlfeld won the 2003 "Richard Tuttle Memorial Scholarship" to study with David Ellsworth of the Ellsworth School of Woodturning in Quakertown. His work has been featured in recent exhibitions, including "Works in Wood - 2007," a national juried exhibition in New Hope, and the "Box Showcase," which was part of the Radius Showcase Series in November.

Radius carries a mixture of decorative and functional examples of Hohlfeld's work that will be featured during an open house at the gallery from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, March 9. Hohlfeld will be on hand to answer questions and meet visitors. Light refreshments provided.
