Harrisburg, PA — Don't miss the dynamic and dazzling Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago at 8 p.m. Friday, April 3, at the Rose Lehrman Arts Center on the Harrisburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.
Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago, the original jazz dance company, founded by legendary dancer and choreographer Gus Giordano, infuses its foundation of Broadway movement with modern styles, never failing to swing. Be there as this world class company of gifted artists brings to life a stunning repertoire of breathtaking dance. The company’s mixed repertory encompasses the broad spectrum of jazz dance while incorporating the distinct Giordano jazz dance tradition. Included in the program for the Rose Lehrman performance will be “Brand New Day” choreographed by Lindsey Leduc Brenner; “Wings” choreographed by Gus Giordano; “A Ritual Dynamic” choreographed by John Lehrer; “Give and Take” choreographed by Brock Clawson; “The Man That Got Away,” Sherry Zunker – choreographer; and “Pyrokinesis” Christopher Huggins – choreographer.
Founded in 1963 by legendary dancer and Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago 3choreographer Gus Giordano, Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago is now under the direction of Nan Giordano. Giordano Jazz Dance Chicago has brought the excitement of American jazz dancing to audiences worldwide. Continually expanding the boundaries of jazz dance while diversifying the repertoire, the group has received critical acclaim for its new works. It serves as host performing company at each summer’s Jazz Dance World Congress, which has been held at the Kennedy Center and other noted venues. In 2004 the company received a Chicago Dance Award for its production and performance of Ron De Jesus’ “Prey,” proving it is one of Chicago’s cultural gems.
Gus Giordano was the first choreographer to codify a jazz technique and develop a specific vocabulary and style, Giordano spent his life championing the dance form – through his school and company, his groundbreaking text, “Anthology of American Jazz Dance” (1975), and the “Jazz Dance World Congress.” Gus Giordano passed away March 2008 at the age of 84.
