HARRISBURG – Michael Sandy is the new director of the expanded Office of International Education and Multicultural Affairs at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.
Sandy, whose career has been focused on international education and cross-cultural partnerships, most recently, was executive director of the Amizade Global Service Learning Consortium for eight years, working with the University of Pittsburgh and West Virginia University to develop international education curriculum from the ground up.
“As we work to infuse HACC's curriculum with a global perspective and bring our international educational programming to the next level, we look forward to the fresh perspective and years of experience Michael Sandy brings to the college,” said Cynthia Doherty, Ph.D., dean of academic affairs/administration.
As director of international education, Sandy will work with HACC staff and faculty to expand opportunities for international exchange programs and to develop curriculum that includes an international focus. Sandy also will continue to promote and expand HACC’s long tradition of offering study abroad programs that include academic tours led by experience professors to England, Egypt, France, Greece, Italy and Turkey.
In addition, Sandy steps into a role that continues to promote HACC’s multicultural programs aimed at raising awareness of the region’s global diversity. He will work with the multicultural affairs coordinators at each of HACC’s five campuses to promote college-wide opportunities that will enhance the campuses and surrounding communities.
Sandy previously taught courses at Pitt and WVU and gave presentations on service learning and international education. He received the University of Pittsburgh Provost’s Innovations in Education Award in 2000. He also has extensive travel experience in the Americas, Europe and Australia as program staff, instructor, volunteer and consultant.
