YORK – Holiday shoppers looking for one-of-a-kind, distinctive gifts can add Artisan Marketplace of York County as a must stop on their to-do list.
More than 50 artists from York County and the region will have their juried work on sale at the third annual marketplace Nov. 20-Jan. 8 at the YorkArts@CityArts Gallery, 118 W. Philadelphia St. The marketplace is co-sponsored by YorkArts and HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.
The public is invited to meet the artists at a reception from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at the gallery.
Among the hand-crafted items are novel bezel glass pendants with a colorfully decorated stink bug inside made by MaryEllen Selleck Henderson of Yoe, who was looking for a new creative project for the annual marketplace.
“She found a way to make lemonade out of lemons from the influx of stink bugs in the area,” said Lisa Steffen, business counselor for HACC’s Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies, co-sponsor of the event with YorkArts.
Visitors to the marketplace also will finda variety of items, including strohsterne (traditional German wheat-woven star ornaments), schnerenschnitte (German style cut paper), jewelry, acrylic and oil paintings, photography and underwater photography, stationery, ceramics/sculpture, polymer clay, fabric, textile, felted purses, fiber art, Pennsylvania history and photography books, stained and etched gourds, herbal bath products, mosaic mirrors, porcelain, and Pennsylvania primitives.
“Everyone benefits from this great collaboration that gives shoppers a chance to buy one-of-a-kind hand-made works that support local artisans,” said Kevin Lenkner, YorkArts executive director.
Dave McNaughton, a business counselor for HACC’s Institute of Entrepreneurial Studies, said, “The quality of work just gets better and better. The artists have a good business sense and recognize what is selling and focus more on the items that are moving.”
“It amazes me each year we find more and more creative artists who participate,” said Fran Verotsky, director of HACC’s Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies. “We are happy to give these artists a venue and the opportunity to develop their business.”
