HARRISBURG — Celebrate the 200th anniversary of Mexico’s independence as Live at Rose Lehrman presents Ballet Folklorico “Quetzalli” de Veracruz.
The ballet company will perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, in the Rose Lehrman Arts Center on the Harrisburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.
Join the pre-show community fiesta at 6 p.m. in the lobby of the Rose Lehrman Arts Center featuring Mexican and Latin American food, art and entertainment – complete with a candy-filled piñata. Information also will be available from varied Latin American community organizations as well as study opportunities through HACC’s Center for Global Education.
Founded in 1985 in Veracruz, Mexico, Ballet Folklorico "Quetzalli" (pronounced ketz-AH-lee) de Veracruz has crisscrossed the globe exciting audiences of all ages. Their visual fiesta of culture and folklore features many regional dances of old Mexico. The music, performed live on authentic stringed instruments, punctuates the meticulous movement, colorful costumes, and perfect pulse established by the dancers. The group’s performances have earned standing ovations from Cuba to Malaysia.
Ballet Folklorico "Quetzalli" is composed of young people who love the traditions of old Mexico. Their brightly colored costumes earned the group its Aztec nickname, “Quetzalli,” after the treasured multicolored bird, the quetzal.
Members of the dance company will be the honored guests at a community meet and greet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, hosted by the Danzante Community Arts Center on 200 Crescent St. in Harrisburg. The group will present a private showing for students from Milton Hershey School and the Harrisburg School District at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, in HACC’s Rose Lehrman Arts Center on the Harrisburg Campus.
Support for this Live at Rose Lehrman event comes from the Affinity Group at the Hershey Foods Company and the HACC Foundation. Live at Rose Lehrman will present Ballet Folklorico “Quetzalli” de Veracruz at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, with a 6 p.m. pre-show fiesta at the Rose Lehrman Arts Center on HACC’s Harrisburg Campus.
