HARRISBURG – Learn the basics of tennis, figure out how to get out of debt, create beautiful art jewelry or explore a variety of other personal enrichment opportunities offered this summer at the HACC-Harrisburg Campus.
            Classes meet at the campus, unless otherwise noted. Among the offerings are:
  • “Tennis, Introduction,” offered from 6:30-8 p.m. Thursdays, July 8-29, at a cost of $75. Local tennis legend Tom Sweitzer will teach this class for both beginners and advance beginner students. Develop fundamental skills of tennis, including strokes, serving, volley, and lob shots. Basic singles and doubles match play also will be covered in a games-based approach. Racquets and balls are provided, however, students may bring their own if they choose.
  • “Tennis Camp for Youth,” offered from 5-6:30 p.m. Thursdays, July 8-29, at a cost of $75. This camp is for youth ages 10-16. Coach Tom Sweitzer will help students understand the fundamental skills of tennis. Develop fundamental skills of tennis, including strokes, serving, volley, and lob shots. Racquets and balls are provided, however, students may bring their own if they choose.
  • “Fused Art Glass Jewelry,” offered from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturdays, June 12-26, at a cost of $65. Learn to create beautiful art glass jewelry by cutting specialty fusing and dichroic glass pieces, which are fired in a kiln. Learn to turn your work into pins, pendants or earrings with wirewrap. Cost includes use of tools. Students will purchase glass and wire from the instructor, and pay a nominal firing fee. All fees must be paid on the first day of class.
  • “From the Articles of Confederation to the Constitution, 1777-89,” offered from 6-9 p.m. Tuesdays, June 15-29, at a cost of $89. The framework with which we govern ourselves, the Constitution, has lasted for over 200 years. How did the founding fathers do it? Areas to be covered include the economic and cultural conditions following the American Revolution, perceived weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation, issues facing members of the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia the summer of 1787, and how the city and rules of the Convention aided in its success.
  • “Non-Traditional and Same-Sex Couple Issues,” offered 6-9 p.m. Thursday, July 15, at a cost of $29. This course will include discussion of the differences between civil unions, gay marriage, state Defense of Marriage statutes, and anti-gay marriage amendments, concentrating on legal status and concerns of non-traditional and same-sex couples in Pennsylvania. Topics will be reviewed based on the differences between basic documents for married heterosexual couples and unmarried couples in committed relationships.
