HARRISBURG – “Portraits from Life” featuring oil paintings by realist artist Scott Noel is the next exhibit Feb. 9-March 4 at the Rose Lehrman Art Gallery on the Harrisburg Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College.
A reception for the artist is scheduled for 5-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, in the gallery.
Noel’s newest body of work focuses on the figure with an increased emphasis on the individual as a portrait and an archetype of young adulthood. The Philadelphia artist works with oil paint on linen, offering a quiet depth that reflects the artist’s interest in the importance of observation.
“I find myself doing a lot of intuitive stretching and interpreting of relationships in a visual field,” said Noel. “This imaginative space interacts and sometimes argues with the empirical facts of measurement. I like to call this imaginative space the ‘space of desire.’ It is Still lifepersonal to me and not something I could really explain. But I am never under any illusion that I'm simply painting the facts before me.”
Noel received a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Washington University in St. Louis and studied at Tyler School of Art at Temple University and also at Yale University. Noel teaches at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He exhibits his work nationally and is represented by the Gross-McCleaf Gallery, Philadelphia. He has received several grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a Franz and Virginia Bader Fund Grant and an Independence Foundation Grant. He has been profiled in American Artist and his work is in prominent collections such as the Museum of The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, The Arkansas Art Center, and LaSalle College Art Museum.
Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday, 5-7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, or by appointment.
