HACC’s Workforce Development and Continuing Education Division is holding the Manufacturing Job Fair to help fill the job skills gap faced by manufacturers as their older workers retire. The event is Nov. 7, 2017, from10 a.m.-2 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
Godshall’s Quality Meats is among the participating employers. Godshall’s, named the 2017 Independent Processor of the Year, is the first Lebanon County manufacturer to contract with HACC to hire two workers who will be trained through the College’s Industrial Manufacturing Technician (IMT) Apprenticeship Program. Godshall’s Quality Meats representatives also are looking to fill up to 12 other job openings.

Skilled Workers Needed to Keep Manufacturing Thriving
In Pennsylvania, and specifically in Central Pennsylvania, manufacturing is alive and thriving – from fruit and vegetable canning, poultry and food processing to pharmaceuticals and durable goods. The challenge is finding people to fill the jobs associated with these occupations.
The skills gap is not new to the U.S. manufacturing industry. With an aging, retiring workforce and no dedicated pipeline of “ready-to-work” individuals, manufacturers in Central Pennsylvania and across the country are realizing there will likely be approximately 2.7 million jobs (22 percent of the existing workforce) that remain unfilled over the next decade.
HACC’s Workforce Development and Continuing Education team visits with manufacturers to brainstorm creative solutions to assist companies with attracting and retaining qualified workers.
HACC Apprenticeships Pave the Way to Success
HACC is approaching the skills gap by working with manufacturers to design apprenticeship programs to train the workforce of the next generation. HACC registered the first IMT Apprenticeship Program in Pennsylvania in February 2017. This 18-month program is designed to teach entry-level individuals how to set up, operate, monitor and control production equipment. The material was developed in conjunction with the Manufacturing Skills Standards Council (MSSC), and four areas are addressed – safety, quality, production and maintenance.
Consisting of both on-the-job and classroom learning, HACC’s IMT Apprenticeship Program works two ways. Companies identify individuals within their current workforce who are ready for the next step in their career to enroll in a class. Companies may also hire new employees and enroll them in classes. All students, whether new to the company or current employees, work full-time jobs alongside a mentor to fulfill the on-the-job learning components and attend class one evening a week.
At the completion of 18 months, the individual receives a National Journey Worker’s Certification, which is a nationally recognized credential. Individuals also receive, through MSSC, the Certified Production Technician certification. The manufacturer benefits from a highly qualified individual trained to perform a number of tasks, allowing the company to continue a cycle of continuous improvement.
