This story is part of our “HACC Heroes” series. We recognize the severity of the global coronavirus pandemic and its impact on our communities. During this challenging time, we want to thank and recognize some of the many HACC employees, students and others who are making a difference. The heroes of this story are a HACC employee and five HACC students from the College’s Nursing Program.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – A dedicated employee involved with the Nursing Program at HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College, wanted to recognize nursing graduating students by doing something special. These hardworking graduating students were not able to celebrate their pinning due to the global coronavirus pandemic.

When the HACC employee learned that Wellspan Health had joined the 100 Million Mask Challenge, she saw an opportunity to celebrate graduates and contribute to a location where many nursing students complete their clinical requirements. The employee committed to making and donating 100 masks, and her two young children helped sew and donate 34 pediatric masks.

Three HACC graduating students and two HACC students volunteered to help deliver the masks to WellSpan Washington St. Health Center in Gettysburg:
  • Janell Baker
  • Christopher Beausoleil
  • Cortney Rowland
  • Logan Smith
  • Holly Swope

Baker, Beausoleil and Swope will complete their studies at HACC this summer, while Rowland and Smith are expected to complete their studies at HACC in December 2020. The anonymous employee said of the students, “I am most proud of their accomplishments and willingness to go above and beyond to help others. They are my heroes.”
